LAURA WOOD

Laura Wood is an Ottawa-based painter whose abstract works are grounded in gesture, emotion, and an intuitive engagement with her materials. Working primarily with paint, she creates compositions that are both elegant and expressive, using colour and form to communicate what she describes as “what otherwise cannot be expressed with words.”

Her process is guided by a balance of spontaneity and control. Paint and colour often lead the way, with chance interactions and unexpected moments playing a key role. Between these fluid gestures, Wood pauses—reflecting, editing, and responding to the marks on the surface. This ongoing dialogue between instinct and intention shapes the development of each piece.

Originally from Aurora, Ontario, Wood studied Painting and Drawing at OCAD University. Her work has been collected widely throughout Canada and the United States.  Notably, her work was acquired by the Office of the Prime Minister in 2024.
