DAINA MATTIS

Daina Mattis (b. 1984) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work examines perception, nature, grief, and technology through imitation, scale, craft, and time. Micak Contemporary is pleased to be exhibiting works from Mattis’ Gem Series and Test Swatch Series.

Born in Los Angeles to Lithuanian immigrants, bilingualism and a culturally rich upbringing informs her exploration and use of visual language. Working across painting, drawing, and object-making, Mattis’ work critiques cultural norms, reflecting on the erosion of the middle class and the illusion of the American Dream.

Her work engages with themes of capitalism, deception, and the blurred line between reality and fabrication—an idea shaped by growing up in Los Angeles, where entertainment and authenticity coexist in plain sight.

Mattis has exhibited widely, with solo shows at High Noon Gallery, New York (2023); AMAG at St. Thomas Aquinas College (2019); and Frances Keevil Gallery, Sydney (2010). She has been featured in WhiteHOT, Design Milk, ARTnews, and Two Coats of Paint. A former co-founder and co-director of Undercurrent in DUMBO, she is represented by High Noon Gallery (New York), Sara Nightingale Gallery (Sag Harbor), and Meno Parkas (Kaunas, Lithuania). She is also a Part-time Assistant Professor at Parsons School of Design, The New School, in New York.
