Gilded Gold
JR Newton

May 16- June 13, 2026
Live Painting by JR Newton: Saturday May 16, 1-4pm
Artist Talk & Reception: Thursday June 4, 6-8pm

Gilded Gold is a striking meditation on portraiture, femininity, and the grandeur of historical painting, reimagined through a contemporary lens. Informed by a recent trip to the Louvre, Newton’s highly technical realist works draw on the visual drama of Renaissance art.

Drapery and jewelry become central motifs, rendered with exquisite detail and material richness, functioning as both adornment and symbolic language. These elements echo historical grandeur while embracing a contemporary balance of material, emotion, and allure.

Newton’s technique, honed through an extensive career beginning with training at OCAD University and the Toronto School of Realism, demonstrates a sophisticated command of classical methods, as though he were trained directly under the Old Masters themselves.

Gilded Gold does not linger in nostalgia. Instead, it moves forward into something new by engaging artificial intelligence as a creative collaborator.

For Newton, AI is not a replacement for technique or creativity, but an extension of imagination, used to reinterpret, fragment, and reassemble historical tropes into something distinctly contemporary.

Newton describes using ChatGPT as an “imaginative friend to bounce ideas off of,” as naturally inspiring as a flower encountered in nature.

The result is a body of work that exists in a dynamic tension between past and future. Gilded Gold suggests that the evolution of art does not abandon tradition but transforms it, layering centuries of visual language with technology to expand the boundaries of inspiration.

About JR Newton:

The masterful paintings of JR Newton possess a timeless quality, evoking the grandeur and technical refinement of the Renaissance Old Masters. Rich in atmosphere and meticulously executed, his works appear as though they have emerged from the pages of art history itself.

Educated at OCAD University and the Academy of Realist Art, Newton has cultivated an exceptional command of classical painting techniques. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of the Old Masters, he employs methods such as glazing, colour underpainting, dramatic chiaroscuro, and richly layered textures to create works of remarkable depth and realism.

A gifted visual storyteller, Newton approaches painting as both poetry and allegory. His compositions invite viewers into immersive and often dreamlike worlds, elevating the beauty of nature, imbuing ordinary objects with reverence, and giving form to scenes born from imagination and myth.

Alongside his studio practice, Newton has completed an extensive range of private commissions, collaborating closely with collectors to realize deeply personal artistic visions. His commissioned works include portraiture, landscapes, murals, mythological scenes, tattoo design, art restoration, and, more recently, a compelling series of biblical narratives.

Newton’s oil paintings and portraits reside in public and private collections around the world, reflecting a distinguished career devoted to craftsmanship, beauty, and the enduring traditions of representational art. He lives and works in Barrie with his wife and four children.
