JONAH STRUB
Toronto-based emerging artist Jonah Strub creates vibrant, humorous ceramic artworks that celebrate the playful complexity of Camp aesthetics. Rooted in exaggeration, kitsch, and theatricality with a touch of witty satire, Camp examines societal norms in a way that both challenges and delights.
Strub’s work reflects his identity and experiences as a gay, Jewish artist, drawing from a diverse educational background in Art and Psychology from the University of Guelph and Cartooning from George Brown College. His dynamic creations combine bright colors, animal prints, whimsical creatures, alter-egos, and pop culture references to explore themes such as queerness, the strength of Jewish matriarchs (“the joys of matzo ball-flavored femininity!”), the preciousness of animals, and the charm of tacky tchotchkes.
Despite their playful, toy-like appearance, Strub’s works reveal a confident refinement and artistic mastery. His practice has earned him international recognition, including exhibitions at the Canadian Glass & Clay Museum, Fusion, The Artist Project, and Black Book Gallery, among others. Strub has also been awarded prestigious artist residencies at the Banff Centre, the University of the Arts Bremen in Germany, and Medalta in Alberta’s historic clay district.
Strub’s bold and imaginative pieces, highlighting a breakout talent who brings joy, depth, and a touch of theatricality to every creation.
