About the Instructor:

Iraqi - Canadian artist Dania Al-Obaidi's encaustic works blend ancient techniques with dynamic, modern compositions. Trained in Fine Arts at Baghdad University and furthering her education in Canada, Al-Obaidi has exhibited extensively across Iraq, Canada, and the United States.

Al-Obaidi's abstract encaustic paintings are deeply influenced by the interplay of memory and emotion. Describing the process of layering wax as like the way memories are built and preserved within the mind, each layer of colour adds depth and meaning.

Encaustic, or “hot wax” painting, is an ancient art form involving mixing heated beeswax with coloured pigments. The wax is then applied in layers onto a surface using tools such as brushes, palette knives, or often in Al-Obaidi's case, her hands.

These visually striking compositions are rich with expressive colours and textures and tell vibrant stories with filled with symbolism and emotive imagery.  Works you can feel.

“Encaustic painting reflects life itself—the balance between discipline and spontaneity. And unlike life, it offers mercy; you can always scrape it off and start anew.” - Dania Al- Obaidi
