NANCY CALDER

The paintings of Nancy Calder transform everyday objects into compelling visual narratives, combining unexpected elements to create charming compositions that evoke nostalgia and invite curiosity.

Trained at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, Calder mastered a wide range of classical tools and techniques. After graduating, she made history as the Academy’s first female instructor, teaching for two years before dedicating herself fully to her artistic practice.

Reflecting on her approach, Calder explains:

“I am always surprised by the degree of dimension that can be achieved—that one can almost reach into a painting and touch the object or feel a sense of connection with the subject of a portrait. I choose objects that appear to have had a life of their own, inviting viewers to wonder how they found their way into the painting. My images are stories describing a specific moment in time—a little curious and vaguely familiar.”

Calder’s thoughtful compositions and meticulous technique continue to captivate viewers, offering moments of introspection and delight through her still life paintings. Calder currently lives in Stratford, Ontario.
