Emerging and Expanding

A group exhibition featuring artists from Kinngait (Cape Dorset)

January 8- February 8, 2025

This exhibition features seven remarkable pieces by artists from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, presented alongside works by Micak Gallery artists.

Emerging and Expanding builds upon the theme of the artist as explorer, introduced in our previous exhibition, while celebrating the imagery, concepts, and symbols central to Northern Inuit communities and their art-making traditions.

This exhibition was made possible through Micak Gallery’s new partnership with Dorset Fine Arts, the distributor for artists working at Kinngait Studios. Established in 1959, Kinngait Studios is a historic artist cooperative and the first Canadian Arctic collective to produce drawings and prints. Located on the southwest coast of Baffin Island, overlooking the Arctic Ocean and surrounded by majestic mountainous terrain, Kinngait (Inuktitut for “mountains”) provides a rich and complex landscape that inspires the artists who live and work there.

Featured Kinngait artists: Saimaiyu Akesuk, Samayuallie Akesuk, Matthew Flaherty, Qavavau Manumie, Issac Oqutaq Tim Pitsiulak, David Pudlat

Also showing: Lindsay Adelman, Dania Al-Obaidi, Christopher Cape, Isha Damania, , Michelle Jamieson, Lisa Johnson, Em McDonald, Heidi McKenzie, Everist Prokofiev, Heather Ruthig, Jordan Shaw, Vin Singh, Jonah Strub, Leah Wells
