CHRISTOPHER CAPE
The oil paintings of Christopher Cape strive to record an essence of fleeting moments. Cape explains: “My art seeks to activate that pivotal moment, where the tangible transform into abstraction, dissolving barriers, and inviting connection.”
Bridging the visual and the visceral, Cape’s work both expresses what is seen and what is experienced during his creative process. Each painting exudes a raw, direct energy, inviting viewers to connect deeply with the subject. By working spontaneously- often outside or en plein air- and using loose, visible brushstrokes, Cape intuitively composes scenes focusing on capturing a specific quality of light, colour, and tonal range.
Cape’s paintings emphasize harmony, evoking the electrifying moments that arise when one is fully immersed in serene or awe-inspiring beauty. His paintings aim to dissolve the imagined boundary between self and nature, offering a sense of unity.
Cape’s practice is informed by his background as an animator and professional rock climber, disciplines he credits with sharpened his ability to observe and intuitively interact. Residing in rural Perth County, Ontario, his days are spent exploring the region in search of inspiration for his paintings.
